New Information: Child Injured In Head-On Crash

October 30, 2006 —

Paramedics with Life Ambulance rushed to the intersection of Old Hueco Tank Road and Socorro Road just after 12 a.m. Monday after a head-on collision was reported.

A 5-year-old girl is in stable condition at Del Sol Medical Center, after surviving what investigators said was a DWI crash involving her older sister.

Socorro police told KFOX 18-year-old Desiree Martinez was driving a Chevy Lumina when a witness, who is also a Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission employee, saw Martinez run a red light at Old Hueco Tanks Road and North Loop.

The car then slammed into a Nissan Frontier, injuring the 26-year-old man driving the vehicle.

Martinez's 5-year-old sister was apparently wearing a seatbelt, but was not strapped into a car seat. The girl is expected to make a full recovery.

Some neighbors in the area were upset to hear of the crash, because they said driving while intoxicated is an all-too-common occurrence in Socorro. Resident Victor Martinez said, "You never know what happens. There's a lot of people driving fast and drinking and driving. Sometimes people fall asleep on the steering wheel. Accidents do happen."

Socorro police officials said the month of October has seen seven cases of DWI, with five happening on the weekends.

They are still searching for a passenger from Martinez's car who they said ran from the scene, and now faces charges of evading arrest.

According to police, Desiree Martinez will face a DWI charge involving a child once she is released from the hospital.
