New Employment Office Targets Professionals

Come Monday, the empty cubicles at the new workforce employment office in downtown El Paso will have computers and employment advisors ready to help professional job seekers.

The Upper Rio Grande at Work is opening a new center at 300 E. Main St. called the Norman Haley Downtown Employment Center.

"We identified the need to have more employers using our services. Secondly, we were not targeting the different businesses and downtown customers, especially professional level customers. We found they were not coming to our centers," said Lorenzo Reyes, chief executive officer for the Upper Rio Grande at Work.

Unlike the other four employment offices that focus on training workers, this one will target professionals.

"When they come here, they're going to be meeting with employment facilitators. They're going to be provided with the services such as resume writing or have access to our database," said Rosa Flores, manager of the new center.

Flores said other services include interview techniques, workshops, presentation, and on-site hiring.

Every client will have his or her own file archived in the career resource center to follow his or her progress.

Flores said employers will also benefit because candidates will already have gone through an assessment test and screening process before he or she is referred for the job.

"We want to keep our people here. We want to let them know there are jobs for those individuals so they don't need to struggle looking for them. We'll have all the services they need available to them right here," said Flores.

If need be, the center has small offices for employers to conduct interviews.

The Upper Rio Grande at Work will be closing it's 5919 Brook Hollow location near Bassett Place on June 29.

The new downtown center will open Monday, June 4, but the grand opening will be celebrated in July.

Hours of operation will be Monday through Friday, 8 p.m. to 5 p.m.
