New commissioner appointed to Tornillo port of entry project

By Renee Narvaiz

EL PASO, Texas —

While El Paso County Commissioner Willie Gandara Jr. remains behind bars, the commissioner's court appointed Commissioner Anna Perez as the temporary point of contact for the new Tornillo port of entry on Monday.

"We do not know how long Commissioner Gandara's absences will be," Perez said. "We need to just create that consistency, put a commissioner on there and I accepted that responsibility."

The massive new bridge and toll booth facility are expected to open in the spring of 2013.

Gandara was part of that project, and as KFOX14 has reported, he was arrested last Wednesday and remains jailed on federal marijuana trafficking charges.
