New Cartel Scheme Targets Unsuspecting Drivers

The FBI uncovers a new drug smuggling scheme following El Paso teacher arrest.

EL PASO, Texas —

Following the recent arrest and release of El Paso teacher Ana Martinez, the FBI says it has uncovered a ploy by cartel members who use vehicle identification numbers to break into cars and hide drugs.

In response the Juarez city council is now pushing a campaign to make drivers more aware of the lurking dangers, and Fort Stockton Sheriff's Deputy T.J. Perkins says that no matter what side of the border you live on, drivers need to be prepared.

"You gotta keep an eye on your vehicle at all times," said Perkins. "Because you never know what they're going to pull."

Perkins said he was visiting El Paso a year ago for a Borderland Sheriff's conference, and during his stay his car was broken into. He says part of vehicle safety is knowing where to check your car for signs of tampering

"You should look underneath the vehicle, check the trunk or the back of your car, and check the tires to make sure the original tires are still on there," Perkins said.

The Juarez campaign called "The ABC's of Crossing into El Paso" suggests letting strangers know about your travel plans, switching the driving routes you take to work or when running errands, parking your car within eyesight, installing an alarm system for your car, and double checking your can inside and out. And, of course, there's the number one most preventable way to keep your car safe.

"Keep it locked up," Perkins said.
