New Cappetto's to open in April

EL PASO, Texas —

El Paso welcomes an old favorite back to town.

"I've done this all my life. Cappetto's has been a part of El Paso for 57 years. It's a natural thing," said Cappetto's owner Ed Davis.

He said he often reminisces about his central El Paso restaurant, Cappetto's. Davis shut down the restaurant in October after being open for more than half a century.

"I literally grew up in there. It was heart-wrenching," Davis said.

Now he's thinking about reopening on the west side of El Paso at the corner of Cincinnati Avenue and Stanton Street.

"Stand out here any time of the day after 11 a.m. and there is nonstop action with people everywhere," Davis said.

Questions still linger about the closing.

"All the employees were paid, so that's not an issue," Davis said.

And debts.

"I'm not gonna talk about that. You want to talk this place, I'll talk about it, and that's all I want to talk about," Davis said.

When Capetto's closed, $30,000 in gift cards were left in people's hands.

"The people from Como's and Dominic's were very helpful with helping people along the way. Even the gift cards that were used will still be honored for their full amount, as well," Davis said.

But he says money is not the issue,  he would rather focus on the future. The new restaurant will be a little smaller, with a menu combining old favorites with a new twist.

"One of the new things at the restaurant will be a brick-oven pizza that is really state-of-the-art, as opposed to a deck oven that we used before. It's just going to produce a great product that has all the elements of before," Davis said.

As for the décor, he's keeping that under wraps until the grand opening in April.

Davis says he will start off by bringing back some of the staff he had to lay off when he closed the restaurant. After that, he will start holding interviews for new staff as early as next month.

The owner of Como's restaurant tells KFOX 14 she was happy to help by accepting Capetto's gift cards when the restaurant closed down. She also says she's glad to see Capetto's making its way back, opening up in west El Paso.

"He's a fighter. We welcome him to the neighborhood. There are lots for people for everybody and new choices for people," Nada Aziz, owner of Como's Italian Restaurant said.

Three restaurants -- Como's Italian Restaurant, Dominic's Italian Restaurant, and Sorrento's Italian Restaurant -- all helped out by taking Cappetto's gift cards. When the new Cappetto's opens up, the owner says he will honor his old gift cards.
