New border crossing may have financial setback

EL PASO COUNTY, Texas —

The borderland's new port of entry is facing a few problems that carry a financial burden.

County commissioners said federal officials did not inform them of a new height requirement for the bridge.

El Paso County Judge Veronica Escobar said they will have to pay for that mistake, but they are talking to their lawyers to see if the government will have to foot the bill in the end since the commissioners were not advised at the time.

Mexican officials have also yet to commit to this project, but Escobar said both of these issues are nothing major to worry about.

"In the history of ports of entry, even in the worst -case scenario where the U.S. started without approval on the Mexican side, it got done. So, it'll get done," Escobar said. "I'm just ready for the shovel groundbreaking."

The port of entry is expected to open next year and will replace the Fabens border crossing.
