New Billboard To Highlight Pet Overpopulation Problem

EL PASO, Texas —

There are all kinds of billboards around El Paso, but a new one going up next week will certainly get your attention.

"On a weekly basis, the billboard numbers will continue to go up," said Rebecca Rojas, with New Hope Alliance.

The numbers Rojas is talking about equates to the number of dogs and cats killed in El Paso because they were either unclaimed or unadopted.

"Last year, the community of El Paso euthanized over 18,000 animals," Rojas told KFOX.

Rojas believes the billboard can be effective in reducing problems like backyard breeders.

"Hundreds of animals are dying in your community, so if you know your neighbors is breeding animals that you'll attempt to talk to the neighbor and educate them," she said.

And owners who do not spay and neuter their pets.

"The only way we are going to control the pet over population problem in our community is if people start to spay and neuter our pets," said Rojas.

She believes with the sign clearly seen over the course of the next year, it will bring a lot of awareness to a growing problem.

"Anytime we talk to the community in El Paso and let them now that there are over 18,000 animals being euthanized in our community, it's a shock," said Rojas.

The billboard will be posted at I-10 and the Piedras exit starting March 8.
