Las Cruces Public School District officials are reviewing a plan for a proposed alternative school aimed at high school students.
The proposed school, under Families and Youth, Inc., is being called Las Montanas. Program officials say it's been in the works for months with a plan to serve at risk-youth.
"I think it's a good opportunity for people [who are] having problems or just can't get focused on school and need more attention on work," said alternative school student Omar Hernandez.
If the school wins approval, the facility will be expected to meet the same requirements and standards as other school districts in New Mexico.
School board officials are expected to meet with FYI representatives in about a month to provide initial feedback.
FYI officials are hoping to open the doors to the proposed school by next year.
