Neighbors Want Factory To Move After Explosion

Excel Apparel is located in a residential area in South Central El Paso, and some living in that area think they need to move after the recent explosion.

"In my opinion I think that they should move to an industrial location and not be in a residential area," said Gelacio Gutierrez from South Central El Paso.

Gutierrez is one of many who felt the explosion while hanging-out at a local bar near the factory, and since then believes Excel Apparel poses a threat to those in the area.

"I think they should move because they use a lot of dangerous chemicals and I think that this area should not contain those types of chemicals." said Gutierrez.

"While some feel Excel is dangerous, others appreciate the factory and believe it's vital to this community."

"Why when the factory was doing good didn't someone say they wanted the factory to close? Now something happens and people want it gone? I don't think so," said John Garza from South Central El Paso.

Garza grew up in a neighborhood, and believes if the factory goes, so will the neighborhood.

As a factory worker himself, Garza says he would hate to see another one close.

And so would Excel's owner, whose family has operated the business for 30 years.

He says they employ between 350 to 700 employees, which would leave many in the area without jobs.

Fire investigators say because of the magnitude of the explosion at the factory they will not know the cause for a few more days.

Fire officials also say that when they find the cause they hope to prevent an explosion from happening again at the factory.
