Neighbors Say Mailbox Notice Is A Scam

EL PASO, Texas —

A handful of Lower Valley residents told KFOX Sunday that they had received a notice on their door that their mailbox was going to be replaced and it was going to cost them $68.

"This makes people think that it's real because it looks very official,” said Irma Reyes, of the Lower Valley.

Reyes is just one of many homeowners who got the notice. On the yellow paper it states that Postmaster General mailboxes will be installed on their street the next day.

"They make you think it’s real and that you have to spend your money for a new mailbox when yours is perfectly fine,” Reyes said.

But the notice is actually an advertisement to sell mailboxes. Toward the bottom of the flier it states "If you want this service.” But Reyes' family was about to pay and she fears others think they have to as well.

"People will think this is real and they will rush into paying for it and they think they have to do it," Reyes said.

At the bottom the flier, it lists a telephone number and the name Ben Allen. Reporter Derek Shore decided to call Allen. He didn't want to speak on camera, but he admitted he does get a number of callers, especially those who don't speak English well, thinking the service is mandatory. But Allen said he is always honest and tells them it is not.

Reyes thinks the notice is meant to purposely trick people out of their money and is trying to take advantage.

“If people are trying to sell a mailbox, they shouldn't be telling you they're going to, they should be asking you if you want it. Do it the right way," Reyes said.

There was no record of Ben Allen or his company Pro Home Installation that could be located with the Better Business Bureau.
