Neighbors Fed Up With Messy Home

By Kandolite Flores

EL PASO,Texas —

An unsightly home in an east side neighborhood has some residents mad.

After calling the city to complain about their neighbors' home, residents we spoke to say they just want it clean.

An unidentified woman described the house to KFOX14. “It give’s the impression that it is abandoned and there is a lot of trash, a lot of trash in the front yard."

Another neighbor who wished to remain anonymous said, "It stinks real bad. I’ve never seen anything like that in my life."

Looking around the neighborhood, a KFOX14 crew could see that almost everyone takes care of their homes and yards, and that’s why some of the neighbors told KFOX14 they are tired of seeing the home, the shape that it is in and the smell that is coming from it.

Old mattresses, broken bikes, chairs, cats and trash are visable around the house.

Homes that look like this can devalue surrounding homes. One of the women asked, “Would you like to buy a house that's right next door to something like that?"

KFOX14 reporter Kandolite Flores went to the home to speak with the owner. She did not want to identify herself but did speak with her.

She asked about her neighbors. ”They should have come to me," she said.

To which one of the women replied, "I feel that she needed more authority that would force her to clean."

The home owner said, ”Do you really see it that bad? I’ve tried everything humanly possible to pick up. We are clearing everything out."

The El Paso City Code Compliance said they have been to the home and complaints like this are very common in the city.

The home owner told KFOX14. "We got a notice last week that the weeds were 12 inches. OK, I know that.”

The city said when a notice is given, to the home owner has seven days to clean up. If assistance is needed, the city can help, but if nothing changes the owner is given a citation.

Depending on how bad the situation is. fines can be up to $2,000. If nothing changes Code Compliance can file criminal charges against the homeowner, who would then have to appear in front of a judge

If there is a home like this in your neighborhood, you can call El Paso City’s Code Compliance at 599-6290 or visit their website at http://www.elpasotexas.gov/environmental_services/code.asp
