Marmolejo is charged with murder in the strangling death of his mother, Gloria Marmolejo, in July 2009.
Garcia said the prosecution and defense will select a jury from a pool of about 220 potential jurors.
Because of the publicity surrounding the case, Marmolejo's attorney, Greg Anderson, had filed a motion to move the trial out of El Paso. Anderson said he plans to submit additional news stories as evidence for that motion on Friday.
Garcia has denied the change of venue motion for now, but said he will reconsider the decision, if necessary.
