EL PASO, Texas —

Monday was the first day the jury heard testimony in the trial of a man accused of stabbing his estranged wife to death at her northeast salon.

Deidre Engleton was found stabbed to death outside her beauty salon on June 16, 2011.

Her estranged husband, Brian Engleton, was arrested for killing his wife of 18 years.

The jury heard about the moments leading up to her death.

Deidre's sister Alisha Anderson lives in Maryland and was on the phone with Deidre moments before she was killed.

Anderson testified, she heard Brian Engleton's voice telling Deidre to "get in the car."

Deidre refused and Anderson said she heard her sister say, "I'm not going anywhere with you."

She then heard her sister say, "Give me my phone back," before the line went dead.

Anderson then testified she called her mother, who lives in El Paso, because she was "concerned something would happen to (Deidre)."

Soldier Demetrius Blakely also testified. He said he was on his way to work when he heard a woman screaming.

Blakely testified when he pulled out of his apartment complex, he saw a woman on the ground next to a beauty salon across the street with a man standing over her.

Blakely pulled over, he approached the man "He was standing over her with a knife. I asked if everything was OK. He turned and said "What?" Blakely testified.

He demonstrated how the man turned around with his hands in the air and one hand wielding a knife.

Blakely said then the man turned and got into his car and drove away.

He identified the man he saw that day as defendant Brian Engleton.

Blakely said he went to the police station to get help.

The defense tried to poke holes in Blakely's story; in court he testified Engleton was holding the knife in the left hand but in his statement to police he said it was the right hand.

Defense attorneys Frank Macias and Veronica Lerma also tried to discredit Anderson.

Anderson said she was on the phone with her sister for about an hour. But phone records show the call lasted 18 minutes.

Anderson testified that the call lasted longer than that (18 minutes).

Several graphic photos of Deidre Engleton lying face down in a pool of blood were shown in the courtroom.

The alleged murder weapon, a knife, was also shown. The pictures showed that the knife was bent at a 90-degree angle.

Before the day's lunch break, Brian Engleton, had an outburst, causing the jurors to be removed from the courtroom.

Engleton said loudly to his attorneys while they were cross examining Blakely, "I already told you we're not going to play that."

When the judge asked him to lower his voice, Engleton said, "It's my fate on the line," and yelled, "I have the right to effective counsel."

Judge Maria Salas-Mendoza told Engleton if he couldn't control his outbursts he would not be allowed in the courtroom.

Engleton entered and exited the courtroom Monday carrying large stacks of files and paperwork.

The judge didn't allow testimony about an aggravated assault incident that Deidre reported against Brian on May 2, 2011, more than a month before her death.

Salas-Mendoza also did not allow testimony about a violation of a restraining order, saying it was too prejudicial.

The murder trial is expected to last all week and possibly into next week.
