Munson Center closes until further notice; city unsure when it will reopen

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

The city of Las Cruces said it isn't sure how long the yellow tape will be up outside of the Munson Center, and said for now it's closed until further notice.

It all has to do with high carbon monoxide (CO) levels inside the building.

"We're disappointed to say the least," Munson Center patron Charles Black said.

Black said he usually goes to the Munson Center two to three times a week and especially enjoys playing pool there.

For now, he's in this smaller recreational center nearby, the Eastside Center.

The Munson center was first temporarily closed Dec. 7 for high CO levels.

Repairs were done on Dec. 26, but it turned out the problem wasn't properly fixed because the city again closed down the center Jan 7.

Technicians said the cause is the building's boiler system and a gas range vent hood.

"It doesn't seem like there's really any reason for it to be closed that long," Black said.

"We want to make sure they can come in, feel the calmness of where they're at, know that it's safe and that they're not going to be evacuated again," Acting Senior Programs administrator Sally Schutte said.

Munson Center members can go to the Benavidez or Eastside Center until it reopens.
