EL PASO, Texas —

Police have released the name of the man killed in east El Paso after an allegedly drunken driver crossed the median into on coming traffic.

Michael Paauwe, 27, was a Fort Bliss soldier originally from Michigan. Thursday evening he was riding a 2007 Suzuki GS83600 motorcycle he recently purchased, according to his Facebook profile. The account also indicates he was a husband and father, with less than a year left before he got out of the Army.

KFOX 14 was first on the scene of Thursday evening's deadly accident.

Police have since charged Cynthia Dominguez, 26, with intoxicated manslaughter.

She was booked into jail on a $100,000 bond.

According to the arrest affidavit, Dominguez crossed over the median into the southbound lanes of Airway near Edgemere in east El Paso. Special Traffic Investigators determined Paauwe tried to swerve to avoid hitting Dominguez's 2002 Ford Taurus, but the car still hit Paauwe.

The accident split the motorcycle in two pieces, and one part was dragged along the road, stuck in the Taurus' under-carriage, until sparks from the dragging ignited a car fire.

Paauwe was taken to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries. Dominguez was transported to Del Sol Medical Center for her injuries and a mandatory blood sample for toxicology reports.

Family members said the funeral for Paauwe would be in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Police said this is the first traffic fatality of 2012.
