Update: Man in northeast crash involving scooter ID'd

EL PASO, Texas —

A man on a scooter who died after being hit by a car has been identified by police.

Police said 64-year-old Jose Flores was driving a scooter northbound on Gateway North at the same time 24-year-old Fort Bliss soldier Merari Williams was headed eastbound on Diana Drive in a Dodge Charger.

Williams crossed under U.S. 54 entering the intersection of Gateway North against the red light, hitting Flores.

The crash happened around 4 p.m. Monday.

The victim was rushed to William Beaumont Army Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, where he later died.

Williams was not injured.

Speed and alcohol are not factors in this collision.

Flores was wearing a helmet.
