EL PASO, Texas —
"I thought being in a gated community like this, you know, there's one way in and one way out, I thought I was relatively safe," said Steven Dilks.
His motorcycle was recently stolen right in front of his apartment.
"We have a pretty clear view from our balcony, that's where our master bedroom is, so it's just amazing that they got it without making a noise and without anybody seeing them," Dilks said.
But this wasn't the first time. Less than two months ago his other bike was stolen.
"The first one, you know, I didn't have to many security devices on it so I kinda felt like OK, I’m a little bit at fault, I should have taken more precaution," said Dilks.
So when he got his second bike he did. His bike was locked up with a steal rope and a pricy alarm, but thieves still got away with it.
"It only takes two guys to lift the motorcycle up and put it in a truck and it's gone. It’s a theft that takes less than a minute to accomplish,” said Crime Prevention Officer Stephen Plummer. The number of motorcycles stolen this year is on a pace to double last year's total. In all of last year, 123 bikes were stolen. Less than halfway way through this year 110 have been stolen.
"There are organized groups that steal these bikes and for the most part these bikes are being stolen for their parts,” said Plummer. Over 90 percent of the motorcycles stolen are sports bikes. Experts recommend you store your motorcycle. If you must leave it outside they suggest using a “U-lock” security device.
Police said these thefts are taking place between 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. and if you see any suspicious vans or trucks cruising through your apartment complex El Paso police strongly urge you to call them.
