Motorcycle Crash Sends Driver And Child Passenger To Hospital

DONA ANA COUNTY, N.M. —

It was a frightening scene in Dona Ana, Wednesday, when a motorcycle collided with a car.

A witness said she was even more shocked to see a young passenger thrown into the air from the motorcycle.

Just before 1 p.m. Wednesday, a car almost passed a truck when the driver noticed a motorcycle coming in the opposite direction.

“The Camaro that was attempting to pass the other vehicle left over 300 feet of skid marks,” said Sgt. Joe Reynaud of the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Department

The Camaro driver attempted to stop, but investigators said he and the motorcycle collided on Dona Ana Road.

“He did not have anti-lock brakes which would have allowed him to steer out of the way," Reynaud said.

The women in the vehicle about to be passed saw it all happen.

“I thought the tire blew, but it was the motorcycle’s tire blew when he hit him," said Joyce Hoskins of Dona Ana. "My sister-in-law saw the little 11-year-old go flying out across the highway”

Hoskins called 911 and got out to help the child until emergency crews arrived. The boy was fine, despite the crash.

“He had some scrapes on his back,” said Hoskins.

She said he got up and walked around before he was taken to a nearby hospital to be checked out. The boy's grandfather, 66-year-old Glen Barth of Mesilla, was taken the hospital with leg injuries.

“The driver of the motorcycle suffered severely broken legs and he was flown to Thomison Hospital in El Paso,” Reynaud said.

Sheriff's investigators said the Camaro driver could face a speeding citation.

“(Dona Ana Road) is well-traveled by motorcycles and we strongly encourage people to watch out for motorcycles,” said Reynaud.

The sheriff's department said both the driver and passenger on the motorcycle were wearing helmets, which possibly saved their lives.
