More Than 100 Animals Found In Chaparral Home

May 26, 2006 —

The sound of barking literally surrounds one trailer home in Chaparral, but dogs aren't the only animals you'll find. There are livestock and birds, and now pigeons have begun to gather around the property.

The Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office is now coming down on the homeowner, the Rev. Louis Ashley, saying it has received complaints from neighbors. But residents with whom KFOX spoke said Ashley has taken animals that people have abandoned.

Neighbor Bonnie Apgar said people from El Paso come and dump their animals in Chaparral and that Ashley saves them and takes care of them the best he can. She said Ashley pays for all of the animals' food and shelter with his own money.

Ashley said he didn't know he was breaking the law and that he was caring for all of the animals the best way he could. He said he never harmed any of them and that he just has too many.

Sheriff's officials said area shelters will begin removing many of the animals next week. Ashley agreed not to house more than eight dogs. He will also be allowed to keep his livestock. No charges were filed against him.
