More national restaurant chains opening in El Paso

EL PASO, Texas —

For some restaurants in West El Paso, business is booming, while others are closing their doors.

The Denver-based Chipotle is just the latest national chain that will soon be calling El Paso home. It's set to open its doors at the end of February. It's located in the Miner Village right across the street from the Special Events Center.

Elliot Berg is a local businessman who worked for about a year to persuade Chipotle to set up shop in El Paso. He's also the man behind the development at Miner Village. It used to be an old Pep Boys, and now it's a booming shopping and food district.

Berg says the key to attracting these businesses is having them visit El Paso and see the possibilities for themselves. He says on paper, El Paso's median income is very low but that leaves out several other factors.

"What's missing is the influx of Mexican nationals and the ones that only come here to shop and eat, and still live on the other side of the border yet play a huge role in our economy," said Berg.

Berg says he's heard rumors of a Whole Foods coming to El Paso. Right now, he is actively working on getting national restaurant chains like Morton's or The Cheesecake Factory to come to the Sun City as well.

" I think this makes a statement that there is a demand by the consumer for these types of businesses, " said Richard Dayoub, the president of the El Paso Chamber of Commerce.
