More Memorial Vases Stolen From Local Cemetery

SANTA TERESA, N.M. —

Sunland Park police continued to search for those responsible for stealing memorial vases from Memory Gardens Cemetery.

According to families of the deceased laid to rest at the cemetery, more vases have been stolen in just the past few days.

"You know it’s somebody that doesn't have any respect, not even for the people that are dead. You know, that's very outrageous," said Lucy Ortega, who has three family members buried at Memory Gardens.

Ortega said the vases attached to the graves of her mother, father and husband have all been stolen.

Police estimate more than 700 vases have been stolen in recent months, at a cost of $300 to $400 each.

"It's unbelievable that they can do this to such a sacred place," Ortega said.

Police told KFOX the majority of the vases may be making their way into Mexico to be sold for scrap metal.

If you have any information that could lead to those responsible for stealing the vases, call the Sunland Park Police Department at (575) 589-6600.
