SANTA TERESA, N.M. —

Officers working at the border crossing in Santa Teresa made three large drug seizures in a five-hour span Friday, officials said.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized a total of 1,166 pounds in three seizures, officials said.

The first occurred around 10 a.m. when a white Dodge Caravan had 164.5 pounds of marijuana in several of the vehicle's compartments, officials said. Dario Nevarez, 48, of Las Cruces, was taken into custody and faces federal drug charges.

About two hours later, a Dodge truck hauling a trailer was selected for inspection. Officers said they found 86 bundles of marijuana in hidden compartments, which weighed 473.4 pounds. Esgar Tarango, 28, of Cuauhtemoc, Chihuahua, Mexico, was taken into custody and faces state prosecution charges.

The final and largest seizure occurred around 1:30 p.m. Officers found a number of issues while interviewing the driver of a Chevy 2600, and they conducted a gamma-ray examination to inspect the vehicle, officials said. The bed of the truck contained 321 marijuana-filled bundles weighing a total of 528 pounds, police said. Juan Flores, 38, of Chihuahua City, Mexico, was taken into custody and faces federal drug charges.

"These seizures were made due to the vigilance of our CBP officers utilizing an array of enforcement tools, officer experience andadvance technology to detect deeply concealed loads of narcotics," said CBP Santa Teresa Port Director Joanne Thale-Lembo. "The sophistication of these concealment methods shows the extent to which smugglers go to introduce contraband to the streets of America."
