More grasshoppers arrive in the Borderland

By Joshua Zuber

EL PASO, Texas —

More grasshoppers invading the Borderland, but one local experts told KFOX 14 it's nothing to be alarmed about.

"We have them from time-to-time in large outbreaks," Dr. Salvador Vitanza, a pest management expert, said.

Meanwhile, the Agrilife extension service says parts of Texas are experiencing a huge grasshopper outbreak.

Experts say what's behind the increase in grasshopper population is the continued drought.

Also, years of mild winters and dry summers allow for effective reproduction.

If these pests are a bother to your property and plants, Vitanza recommends pesticides for young grasshoppers.

However, the better idea might be to cover up your plants.

"The best control tactic available is to have some physical barrier like cheap clothes."

Grasshopper will likely get worse until September, when colder weather arrives.
