More bugs coming inside homes due to drought

El Paso bug exterminators say call volume for their services is up.

EL PASO, Texas —

Your parents always told you to make sure you room is clean so you don't get bugs.

They're right, especially since our area continues to be in a drought.

"With the drought, there is a lot more competition among the insects for food," exterminator Omar Bojorquez said. He owns Del Norte Exterminating Co.

He said he is certainly busier than last year.

"I believe there's more calls due to a lack of water, also," Bojorquez said.

KFOX 14 talked to four local exterminators Monday. They all said ants, roaches, crickets, and termites are the biggest issues this year.

"The only thing is is it seems to be coming later and later. It's warming up a lot more. The rainy season is later, and so we're getting termites later."

The drought makes it worse.

So what can you do to make those pests go away?

"You want to go for a bait, which is poison. You know it's food. They think it's a meal, but it's poison meal. it's kills them off because they'll carry them back to the nests," Bojorquez said.

If that doesn't work, you can always hire a professional.
