Monsoon 2012 "disappointing"

El Paso National Weather Service meteorologists hoping winter will provide more rain and snow.

EL PASO, Texas —

The Monsoon season ends in the Borderland with rainfall totals less than average.

"Monsoon 2012, much like monsoon 2011, was kind of a disappointment. It was kind of underwhelming," National Weather Service Meteorologist John Fausett said.

The Monsoon official runs June 15 to Sept. 30 annually.

This year's official total at El Paso's International airport is 4.45 inches, which is more than an inch below average.

"One of the reasons was high pressure aloft both summers. It's been too strong and too expansive, and it just bogged out over the area so even it would get moisture into this area -- sinking area under that high would suppress thunderstorms," Fausett said.

But with an El Nino weather pattern possible, come the winter time, the Borderland could see more rain and snow.

"A weak El Nino is still projected by the National Climate Prediction Center. And if that delivers a weak El Nino would be much better than the La Ninas we've had the last two winter seasons which were dry."

Fausett said that could mean more rain, which would help with our current drought, because if it doesn't, the Borderland could face another year of dry conditions.

"The biggest impact would be on farmers," Meteorologist Jason Grzywacz said.

A persistent, or worse, drought could mean a bigger hit to your wallet like at the grocery store.
