EL PASO, Texas —

Mocospace has gained the attention of local law enforcement lately, especially after the assault of 14-year-old girls in Dona Ana County. The girls say they met two adult men online on the site and that eventually led to the crimes.

KFOX 14 News' Geoff Tyler investigated the site and found out there are others who may be using the social media website to break the law in other ways. A couple who uses Mocospace told KFOX 14 they had actually seen people buy and sell drugs on the site. Over the past week, Tyler looked into this claim. He then spoke with the El Paso County District Attorney's Office about the fact that he may have found alleged drug deals on this website.

"Frankly I don't think we have a case pending in our office where we have the sale of drugs over the Internet. It's news to me when you approached us. We haven't actively been involved in those types of cases," District Attorney Jaime Esparza said.

Typically, investigators are concerned about other types of illegal activity online.

"We monitor the Internet along with the El Paso Police Department for people who are trying to engage in some sort of sexual business or trying to solicit a minor, but we don't have an active task force monitoring the Internet for the sale of drugs," Esparza said.

Finding illegal activity on social sites has its challenges.

"Identifying who is on the Internet is not the easiest to do, and then there are so many sites that it is hard to monitor," said Esparza.

He says he feels like they are up to the challenge, though.

"We see families that are torn apart by illegal drug use, and we see the consequences of using illegal drugs. I'll certainly have a conversation with the sheriff and the chief of police. but it is my guess that there would be federal agencies interested as well." Esparza said.

Mocospace has previously told KFOX 14 that it works with federal and local authorities on a daily basis, and informs them when it sees a law that has been broken.
