LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

The Miss New Mexico and Miss America organizations are looking through contracts and policies to determine what, if anything, will happen to Miss Las Cruces' title after she was arrested for drunk driving Sunday.

"We are taking this very, very seriously," Miss Las Cruces Executive Director Aleigha DiRenzo said.

Sarah Richardson, 22, won the title of Miss Las Cruces November 3 and was given a $100 certificate for school. That was just a month and a half before she caused a four-car crash on Avenida de Mesilla. Police said she was driving drunk at the time.

"We usually don't anticipate something like this coming up so we're very surprised and saddended," DiRenzo said.

Richardson is charged with aggravated DWI and due care collision.

There were no serious injuries reported.

DiRenzo said she never expected anything like this because the NMSU dance student seemed like a model representative for the Miss Las Cruces pageant.

"She's a great young woman," DiRenzo said. "She really is and this is just a very bad mistake on her part."

DiRenzo said she has been in frequent communication with the Miss America board and Miss New Mexico board to discuss what should happen to Richardson's title. She's hoping to have an answer by Wednesday.

"Our girls are smart and talented and very dedicated to community service," DiRenzo said. "This was very surprising."
