The Military Times EDGE surveyed more than 1,000 major companies and top government contractors with a detailed questionnaire about their recruiting and hiring policies, social recognition for veterans and pay and benefits for reservists. They looked for companies that didn't just talk about how much they support the military, but had in place tangible policies and programs to help veterans get in the door and feel welcome once inside.

In the financial services industry, hiring veterans has come into fashion, the Military Times EDGE reports. Ten of the top 40 companies on the list this year specialize in financial services, including the top-scoring company, USAA.

Five major international banks, two of which made it onto the list — Bank of America and Citi — have signed on to Veterans on Wall Street, an initiative to recognize that military skills such as quick thinking and networking translate exceptionally well to the high-speed financial world.

The publication looked at:

• Recruiting: Budget and staff dedicated to military hiring, venues where jobs were marketed to veterans, percentage of new hires who were veterans.
•Reserve policies: Pay and benefits for activated National Guardsmen and reservists, policies to accommodate and support their deployments.
•Corporate culture: Representation of veterans in the workforce and on the executive team, social support and networking for veterans, programs for miltiary spouses and dependents, training and orientation for veterans, and involvement in military and veterans causes.
