Military spouses for hire

Fort Bliss hosts job fair

By Kandolite Flores

EL PASO, Texas —

As servicemen and women transition to civilian life they face challenges in finding work outside of the military.  However, they aren't alone, usually their spouse also deals with several obstacles.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce will be on post at Fort Bliss to host a hiring fair. The fair is meant for military spouses of all branches including active duty, National Guard, reserves and retired veterans.

The fair is part of the Hiring our Heroes program, the group bringing together 10 of the top nonprofits in the U.S whose focus is on helping military spouses find employment.

There will be more than 25 different employers on east Fort Bliss at the Centennial Conference Center looking to hire military spouses like Kathryn Charlton who recently moved to El Paso from Virginia with her husband Justin who is a soldier in the U.S. Army and stationed at Fort Bliss.

Charlton said, "I've heard horror stories of the past that certain careers and jobs wouldn't hire wives because they're army wives because you're going to move you're not guaranteed to stay there. So I'm noticing a lot more wives try to get involved in the government because government jobs usually transfer easier. Also if you move with your husband on his orders you have military spouse preference but for us wives who didn't move with our husbands till afterwards its makes it a little more difficult. Even preferred wives don't always get those positions it just depends on what jobs are available."

She's been on the job hunt for about four months now.

"It's extremely frustrating you sit there every day and you look on Monster.com or USAjobs.com or even just the classifieds on the El Paso Times. It can be discouraging. The economy up there is horrible, horrible and whenever I moved down here I was hoping because it's a little bit of a smaller area maybe it'll be a little bit better but it's not by much," she said.

There are various organizations and programs like 'Hiring our Heroes' that can help.

"Through the Army and their workforce center they have a group with 'work in Texas' and they have opened up so many doors but it's still a challenge. You still have to go on the websites, you still have to look, and you still have to go talk to people and figure out where there are jobs available right now. In the end all you can do is keep trying," said Charlton.

The Hiring Our Heroes Military Spouse Business Alliance Hiring Fair and Career Forum will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Centennial Conference Center.
