Military Spouses Forced To Leave Career Behind Get Help

EL PASO, Texas —

They fight for our country and often leave their families for months, military life can be a difficult lifestyle and sometimes it's even harder on their spouses. One organization has stepped in to help them through their hardships.

"I applied for many jobs, it just was hard for me to get a job so I found out about the program they had and applied,” said Chasity Colon, a Fort Bliss spouse. Colon relocated to the Sun city after her husband was stationed at Fort Bliss. She worked as a dietary manager for 15 years but when she tried looking for a job here she said it seemed as if all the doors closed o her. "No positions open, cut backs, they were actually laying people off instead of hiring," said Colon. "I had to actually change my whole career field."

Changing careers obviously wasn't in her plans, but thanks to special funding from Workforce Solutions Upper Rio Grande, military spouses can re-adjust and get back on track through free training, and support services like transportation and child care. "If it weren't for this program there would be many military spouses out of work," added Colon. “I can actually go to school and they pay for it 100 percent."

Some who attended Wednesday's job fair and conference even walked out with jobs.

If you know of any military spouses who had to relocate or if you, yourself didn't get a chance to come out and take advantage of the opportunities call 566-8649 for more information.
