Mexico Catches Alleged Leader Of La Familia Gang

MEXICO CITY —

Mexican federal police said they have arrested a leader of a drug cartel that recently made an unusual offer to disband if the government proves it can protect citizens from other criminals in a western state.

Federal Police anti-narcotics chief Ramon Pequeno said Jose Alfredo Landa was in charge of La Familia operations in Morelia, the Michoacan state capital.

Pequeno said police surrounded a house outside the city Monday and captured Landa and three others. He announced the capture Tuesday.

Landa was the second suspected La Familia leader arrested since the cartel made its offer in letters dropped on streets and e-mailed to journalists.
