EL PASO, Texas —

A Mexican Wolf from the El Paso Zoo is on its way to Washington state.

Fern was born at the Cincinnati zoo in 2002.

She was brought to El Paso in November 2004.

She's being transferred to the Wolf Haven Breeding Facility in hopes of re-introducing the species back into the wild.

Biologists believe Mexican wolves went extinct in the wild during the late 1970s.

The Mexican wolf is the most endangered canine in the world with less than 40 remaining in the wild, said animal curator with the El Paso Zoo John Kiseda.
