Mexican Journalist Killed Honored In Washington, D.C.

EL PASO, Texas —

Fellow journalists said he was just a man doing his job. But for El Diario newspaper reporter Armando Rodriguez, uncovering the truth became deadly.

"He was taking his daughter to school and somebody came and shot him in the head," said Alberto Ibarguen, chair of the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

At a ceremony at the Newseum Monday, Armando Rodriguez's name was added to a national memorial.

He is one of 62 journalists killed in 2008.

"When Armando was killed, I never saw in my life such an expression of grief, collective sadness in the newsroom of Diario," said Armando Velez, Rodriguez’s colleague at El Diario.

Rodriguez covered the police beat in Juarez and even came to El Paso for safety, but returned to Juarez to work on stories.

Ibarguen said more journalists are being killed in Mexico as the cartels grow more powerful.

"All of that money, all of those interests want to keep the story suppressed, want to keep the story quiet," Ibarguen said.

But journalists still writing at El Diario said violence will not make them put down the pen. The story will be told.

“They failed because I think after Armando's death, we got more courage to continue to do our jobs as journalists,” said Velez.
