The escalating violence in Ciudad Juarez with no end in sight is taking a toll on thousands of families -- including that of Cesar Campos, who recently lost several family members.
"Five of my relatives got killed last year in less than three months. It's a hard hit for me along with my family members,” Campos said.
In an effort to cut back on the ruthless killings in one of the deadliest cities in the world, earlier this month U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement stopped sending Mexicans who have committed crimes in the U.S. back to Juarez. Instead they're taken and released in other ports of entry in Texas such as Del Rio, Laredo and Eagle Pass.
"If they're already over there I’m sure they're just going to go back to the same thing they were doing if not worse," said Angelica Onsurez of west El Paso.
Juarez Mayor Jose Reyes Ferriz told the Wall Street Journal that many of the deportees entering his country are “killers, rapists, and hardened criminals” and the only way to crack down on drug cartel crimes is to reroute those deported to other parts of Mexico.
The journal also reports a little more than 6,000 deported convicts arrived into Juarez from the U.S. in 2009 alone, according to ICE.
The transferring to other points of entry is reportedly only a temporary measure.
