Related

January 27, 2005 —

On a daily basis hundreds of children and their parents walk the streets of this neighborhood to go to school. But they were unaware what was going on inside this home on 10482 Davwood.

Julian Rivera- Grandparent, "That's not a very good idea, kids come out from school and parents pick them up, it's dangerous."

As we reported on the KFOX Morning News, drug enforcement agents took 7 people into custody last night. The DEA discovered a methamphetamine laboratory inside this home.

Connie Sanchez- Parent, "When I found out I thought it was incredible that someone can keep it inside a home and so near a school."

The meth lab was inside the home on Davwood which is right across the street from Eastwood Heights Elementary.

Parents were surprised to find out but they were also furious.

Rivera, "It's dangerous for kids and it's a bad influence for the whole neighborhood."

Patsy Carmona- Parent, "We don't want the kids to find out especially if they're a little older, we don't want them to go and might involve themselves."

While parents and neighbors don't suspect young children were coming to this home, they do understand the dangers involved in a meth lab.

Sanchez, "Being it's a dangerous chemical, it's used for bombs or if mixed together, you get something dangerous."

The El Paso Police Department spokesman, Darrel Petry, tells us the chemicals used for the production of methamphetamines are volatile and unstable.

Darrel Petry- Spokesman El Paso Police Department, "That creates a big hazard not only to the people who are making and producing the meth but also to the structure their in."

Law enforcement authorities say there are always clues as to where there's drug activity and sometimes neighbors are the ones to point those out to the authorities.

Rivera, "Just keep on the look out for them."

Some of the indicators are different vehicles arriving at the home at all hours of the day or night and unkept yards.

If you believe something suspicious is happening at a home in your neighborhood you can call police dispatch at 832-4400 or the narcotics section at 629-8600.
