Mesilla Stores Close Before New Year

MESILLA, N.M. —

Visitors said it's unfortunate, but a sign of tough economic times for the town of Mesilla.

Two stores will close their doors for good at the end of business Tuesday.

Valerie Womack got all of her toys at 50 percent off at Ninos del Cielo, but she knew she wouldn’t be able to shop there again.

“I think people will concentrate more on the necessities and forgo some of the fun things,” Womack said.

The owners said they are celebrating a retirement, but ending while afloat.

“We felt if we were going to retire, this would be a good time to do it, not knowing what the economy was going to be like in the upcoming years,” said Ninos del Cielo owner Tita Brewster.

Brewster said she will miss the kids playing in the store, but now she and her husband are focusing on packing things up.

“We've been 50 percent off since the first of December. Come on in -- everything is for sale and if you want to try to cut a deal, let me know," said Brewster.

The Corn Maiden store in the Mesilla Plaza is selling at half-off, too.

“Partially because of the economy, an increase in rent -- I think I could list off a half-dozen reasons or more why we're going to close the store, but mainly the economy,” said Corn Maiden clerk Beverly Schuette.

Many said something has been missing for months.

“Much fewer foot traffic, people aren't as eager to spend their extra dollars coming in and buying souvenirs," Schuette said.

The Corn Maiden's merchandise will move to another store in Ruidoso. The tourist town of Mesilla has had to up prices and cut spending because the fewer visitors this year.
