Meetings Scheduled For Proposed Rapid Transit

EL PASO, Texas —

A bus rapid transit system could soon be heading to the Borderland.

El Paso city leaders are looking at heavily traveled bus routes for the proposed system with the goal of alleviating congestion in the city, and this week they want to hear from residents.

The first meeting is being held at Jefferson High School on Alameda Avenue, one of the busiest bus lines in the Sun City. The Alameda corridor along with Dyer Street, Mesa Street and Montana Avenue are all the primary targets of the proposed rapid transit system.

The goal is for riders to have a faster and easier commute.

In the past years and months there have been several improvements within Sun Metro, from a new downtown boarding station to improved time rates.

Other cities already use rapid transit, and city officials also hope to bring modern bus service to El Pasoans. Benefits of the bus rapid transit system include less traffic congestion and more convenient rider experience.

The BRT system is similar to a rail system, but costs much less. Each corridor could be equipped with rapid-transit-only lanes.

Anyone who would like to voice their concerns and thoughts is asked to attend the following public meetings scheduled for this week. All are set to start at 6 p.m.

The first meeting to discuss the Alameda area will be held today Monday March 29, in the auditorium at Jefferson High School, 4700 Alameda. Tuesday, at Hillside Elementary School on 4500 Clifton Avenue in the cafeteria where they will discuss the Montana area.

Wednesday March 31, at Morehead Middle School on 5625 Confetti Drive to discuss the Mesa area. The last one for discussion of the Dyer area will be held Thursday at Moye Elementary School located on 4500 Alps Drive.
