SUNLAND PARK, New Mexico —

Time is running out for Sunland Park Mayor-Elect Daniel Salinas to be sworn in. According to state law, Salinas has to be sworn in by April 5. The problem is, he's not allowed on city property and is banned from having any contact with city employees because of conditions surrounding two criminal charges against him.

On Wednesday, Salinas' attorney filed a motion with the New Mexico Supreme Court. The mayor-elect hopes the high court will order the district court to loosen the conditions enough to allow him to be sworn in. His attorney, Joshua Spencer, says the restrictions violate Salinas' constitutional rights.

The justices have not made a decision on whether or not they will hear the case. Salinas won the election despite facing charges after he was accused of extorting fellow candidate Gerardo Hernandez.

He was then hit with charges of bribery. He has pleaded not guilty in both cases.
