VINTON, Texas —
In an effort to help cleanse the bad blood surrounding village politics, citizens who are "Matachines," religious dancers, performed in the council chambers.
Monday night, citizens performed the religious dance, prayed and meditated for peace and resolve among village leaders.
"We are praying because the violence is going to grow and we don't want that. We want to make it peaceful because if it's peaceful, we can do more than if we are hating each other and yelling at each other," said Rogelio Murillo, a citizen of Vinton.
Over the last few months, the village council has been at the center of controversy as three councilwomen have repeatedly blocked efforts for water and sewer, prevented the village from passing a tax rate and a budget, and put the village in a half million dollar debt after they refused more than $30 million in grant funding.
