Man suspected of stealing stove from newly-built home

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

Police arrested a man suspected of stealing the kitchen stove from a newly-constructed home and then leading them on a chase in Las Cruces.

Jose Marcos Hernandez De La Cruz, 41, was charged with one count each of residential burglary, larceny, tampering with evidence, and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer.

Early Friday morning, police were alerted to a silent burglar alarm going off at a home on the 6000 block of Solstice Road. As the first officer arrived on scene, he spotted a man, later identified as De La Cruz, loading a stove into the back of a black Ford pickup.

As the officer drove up to the house, De La Cruz jumped into the driver's seat drove off at a high rate of speed, police said.

De La Cruz then led the officer on a pursuit on dirt roads and through an undeveloped area from Solstice to La Reina Road where he lost control of the vehicle near the intersection with Desert Wind Way.

De La Cruz then led officers on a brief foot pursuit before being taken into custody.

De La Cruz is being held without bond at the Dona Ana County Detention Center.
