Man Says City Project Ruined His Driveway

City Leaves A 9-Inch Drop Into Driveway

By Ric Dupont

EL PASO, Texas —

A Socorro man said a city project ruined his driveway.

The Access Way project is funded by the city of Socorro and is intended to add beauty to the neighborhoods. Slabs of concrete are being laid out in the city-owned areas between the road and peoples’ driveways.

Armand Delage and his 71-year-old mother, Carmen, were left with a nine-inch drop at the end of the concrete. They said they can no longer pull their car in or out of the driveway. Carmen Delage said she even has a hard time stepping off of the concrete to enter her property, and she has to park on the street.

Armand Delage said he grew up in this house. His mom has owned the house for about 40 years. They removed dirt from their property years ago so they could irrigate the land with water from a nearby canal.

Some of his neighbors have low property too. Armand showed KFOX14 news reporter Ric Dupont how work crews cut the concrete for some of the other neighbors to ramp down into their driveways.

Delage said he spoke with city Representative Willie Madrid about the problem. He said Madrid told him that the city would not build a ramp for him or his mom.

"What are they doing?” Carmen Delage said. “What is so different here that doesn't apply to the rest of the neighborhood?"

Dupont spoke with Madrid on the phone Thursday. Madrid told Dupont that Armand was angry when they discussed the issue, so he just walked away. Madrid said the city is going to fix this problem but they'll do it after they're done with the 600 driveways they're working on.
