Man May Be Stalking Families Near Soccoro School

EL PASO, Texas —

Gretchen Garcia usually walks her son to school. Friday afternoon, she chose to drive after what happened to her earlier in the week. “I live three blocks from the school. When we came to the first block, he crossed the street and leaned up against the wall and waited. When I crossed, I passed him and he started following me,” Garcia said.

Garcia said that is when two crosswalk ladies saw what happened and pulled up to her and told her to get in their van.

“I called the police. I just felt threatened. I just did not feel right,” Garcia said.

“They say they could not take him in for following someone, so I don’t know how far it has to go. I am thinking if those ladies did not pick me up what could have happened,” Garcia said.

Soccoro Independent School District Officials said safety is always a priority but that there is not much they can do.

Assistant Superintendent Pat O’Neill told KFOX, “We are not going to infringe on anyone’s rights. You are innocent until proven guilty. This is the U.S.” He went on to say, “I’m not going to be naive and say that it won’t happen. Every report that comes through is checked out. We don’t ignore any report.”

Garcia said she still feels more comfortable behind the wheel than walking in her area. “We shouldn’t have to feel this way in our own neighborhood,” she said.
