EL PASO, Texas —

El Paso police officers arrested Charles Joe Baca, 45, after they said he used a gas line torn from a furnace as a weapon.

The officers were called out to the 5200 block of Fairbanks Drive in Northeast El Paso at 2:45 a.m. on Friday to a family fight call.

Police officials said as officers approached Baca inside the apartment, he was seen holding a gas line torn from a furnace.

Officers continued to walk toward Baca, when they said he pointed the gas line at the officers and lit the gas flowing from the line.

Officers said a fire ball forced them to leave the apartment. El Paso fire fighters on the scene assisted the officers with going back into the apartment and securing the gas line.

After a short struggle, police officials said they were able to take Baca into custody.

Baca is charged with aggravated assault on a public servant, arson, resisting arrest, evading arrest and interference with public duties. He was booked into the El Paso County jail on a $102,000 bond.
