Man convicted of murder in death of Las Cruces man sentenced

EL PASO, Texas —

A man convicted of first-degree murder in the 2006 shooting death of a 19-year-old from Las Cruces received a life sentence Wednesday.

Victor Paiz was sentenced to life plus 22 years, according to the prosecutor.

He was convicted Monday along with other charges in Jesus Bustillos' death.

Prosecutors said Bustillos wasn't the intended target of the attack, but happened to be driving a vehicle belonging to the intended target.

Authorities say the intended target had an earlier dispute with Paiz.

This is the second time Paiz has been tried in Bustillos' death.   Paiz was convicted in Bustillos' death four years ago, but a state Supreme Court ruling forced the case to be re-tried.

Justices ruled prosecutors had lumped a separate drug-trafficking count in with the murder charge, which could have prejudiced the jurors.
