EL PASO, TX —

El Paso police officials said a man was arrested on Saturday afternoon after he allegedly threatened to shoot an off-duty officer outside a Kmart store parking lot.

Police said on Saturday afternoon around 4:30 p.m. Lorenzo Barron 41, approached an off-duty officer and his family outside the Kmart store on Montwood.

The officer said Barron asked him for $100 for his child who was sick with cancer. Barron then allegedly became upset when the officer refused and told him that he was going to his car to get a .45 pistol and that he would “pop” him. Fearing for his safety the officer also retrieved his weapon, but Barron was not apprehended at that time.

About 30 minutes later, officers responded to the same store after Kmart employees saw Barron take several items from the store and leave without paying.

A witness was able to obtain Barron’s license plate number while he drove away in a 2004 Ford Expedition.

Officers then responded to the 1800 block of Jerry Abbott off Trawood and arrested Barron in front of his home.

Barron was charged with making a terroristic threat, theft of property and a third DWI offense.

Barron was booked into El Paso County detention facility on a $1500 bond.
