Man Accused Of Animal Cruelty May Face Another Jury

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

A 38-year-old man accused of beating a colt to death may face another jury.

Greg Collier faces felony charges of extreme animal cruelty.

Jurors deliberated Thursday for several hours but were unable to come up with a unanimous decision on the case.

The trial began Monday and was expected to last only two days.

The state will continue to work on the case.

"To me it seemed like we still have our justice system and he still is there and the court is still here and our people are still working on it,” said New Mexico livestock inspector Don Hatfield.

The colt’s owner said the 10-month-old animal died the day after Collier attempted to train it.

Collier faced 18 months in prison and up to a $5,000 fine.
