Maid accuses local attorney of assault

Attorney denies, says life is being made a public spectacle

By Veronica Macias

EL PASO, Texas —

A maid accuses a well-known El Paso attorney of assaulting her on Oct. 17, but the attorney denies those claims and says the city of El Paso is trying to make her life a public spectacle.

Instead, Theresa Caballero is accusing her maid of lying and stealing from her.

"On Sunday when I realized that somebody had stolen the money I filed a police report," said Caballero.

Caballero is also very upset that the City of El Paso notified city council members about the incident.
An email from the deputy city manager, David Almonte, was sent out on Oct. 18 letting them know El Paso police had visited the home of Caballero on an assault call. The email from Almonte also indicated that a "preliminary report was that Caballero assaulted the woman, who wanted to know why she was dismissed."

Almonte said that council members are notified about anything high-profile and Caballero is a high-profile attorney in El Paso.

"Somebody had broken into my house at night and I caught her. And I chased her down the street but they can't come help me but they can notify people on city council who don't care about doing anything except making my life a public spectacle. It's unacceptable," said Caballero.

The maid's name is still unknown. Police said they are investigating. KFOX-14 tried to obtained a police report but it will not be available until Monday.

Caballero possibly stands to lose her law license. She and another local attorney, Stuart Leeds, face disciplinary cases before the State Bar of Texas stemming from their conduct in a trial last year.
