Magazine: El Paso One Of The Least Patriotic Cities

EL PASO, Texas —

El Paso is one of the least patriotic cities in the country according to Men's Health Magazine.

Suki's in Northeast El Paso and across from Fort Bliss is probably as patriotic of a barber shop as you can get: from red, white and blue signage to being closed on the Fourth of July.

So those inside were pretty surprised by the Men's Health Magazine poll.

"El Paso might be somewhere in there, but not in the 99th place," said Sergio Chavez, from West El Paso.

El Paso is 99th out of 100 cities when it comes to patriotism in the magazine poll, right in front of Jersey City, N.J.

The study was based on voter turnout, money spent on military veterans and sales of fireworks and U.S. flags.

"Western Playland has them every year; Chamizal has them every year; Montana Vista, I mean, it's great, there's a lot fun, activities out there," Chavez told KFOX.

At GI Supply in Northeast El Paso, the soldiers KFOX spoke with said even though they're not from the area, they also feel like it's a very patriotic city.

"I think El Paso is very patriotic. Everywhere you go, they usually support military with discounts and things like that," said Jennifer Harris, who has called Fort Bliss and El Paso home for the last year, even though she is from California. "On occasion I go places and people thank me for what I do, things like that, ask me what I do. They're really interested and just supportive."

She thinks El Paso should be more like number 9, instead of 99.

"I think El Paso is out of all the places I've been too, very patriotic," she said.

The most patriotic city in America is Portland, Ore., according to Men's Health Magazine.
