EL PASO, Texas —

As forecast, Thursday's overnight low neared the zero mark while the Las Cruces area hit that temperature but KFOX14 Morning News weathercaster Brad Montgomery warns it can still get colder.

As of 5 a.m., the temperature hovered at 3-degrees at the El Paso International Airport while Las Cruces suffered the 0-degree mark. Brad told viewers the coldest temperatures were expected to be recorded between 6 a.m. and 6:30 a.m., just before sunrise.

The big story the community will face will be the bitter cold marked with winds. Winds are forecast from 5-10 mph but with the bitter cold, wind chills will feel like -10 to -20 degrees.

Brad forecasts sporadic snow flurries and patchy ice.

El Paso emergency officials want residents off the road to leave I-10, U.S. 54 and other main roads to emergency vehicles.

Fort Bliss, UTEP, NMSU, EPCC and most of the area's school campuses are closed. For a full listing of closures, click here
