Truck crashes into pole injuring two people

By Ruben Veloz and El Paso Police, Family

EL PASO, Texas —

Two people were taken to the hospital after crashing into a 4-foot concrete base, knocking over a light pole on Dyer Street and Diana Avenue.

"I got the call from my mom saying my brother was in a car accident," said Sebastian Holguin. "I was just trying to get here as fast as I could, but I just wanted to make sure my brother was OK."

Family members and friends who found out about the accident rushed to the scene.

The accident happened next to the northeast Walgreens pharmacy drive-thru, missing the KFC restaurant, Wednesday night.

"I heard he hit it pretty hard," said Holguin. "But the passenger that was with him, I think her injuries were pretty serious too."

Officers said the driver was driving in the parking lot when he turned too fast and crashed into a pole, causing the female passenger to hit the windshield.

The 19-year-old driver and the passenger both suffered head injuries and were taken to the hospital.

Police can't confirm if the passenger or the driver were wearing their seat belt at the time.

Holguin told KFOX14 that the truck had just had new tires installed, and that one of the tires was having problems.

Officers at the scene can't confirm what caused the crash, but believe speed was a factor.
